Local Home Opticians FAQS

Who is eligible for an NHS-funded home eye test?

You may qualify for a free NHS-funded home eye test if you meet any of the following criteria:
  • Age: You are aged 60 or over.
  • Medical Conditions: You have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma, or you are considered at risk of glaucoma as advised by an optometrist.
  • Vision Impairments: You are registered as partially sighted or blind.
  • Benefits: You receive certain benefits such as Income Support, Pension Credit, or Universal Credit.
  • Family History: You are aged 40 or over with a close family history of glaucoma.

What happens during an eye test at home?

In order for you to receive a personal and professional service, we aim to:

  • Conduct thorough and professional eye examinations to the same standard as you would expect in a high street practice.
  • Carry out the examination with the latest optical equipment in the comfort of your own home.
  • Provide examinations carried out by an Optometrist registered with the British College of Optometrists.
  • Provide a prompt and responsive locally based service.
  • Work closely with local GPs and eye clinics.
  • Offer an extensive range of very competitively priced frames and lens.
Encourage clients to use their own frames where possible.
  • Providing training to carers on how they can maximise quality of sight and an explanation of common eye diseases.

How long does a home eye test take?

A home eye test typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour. The duration may vary based on individual needs and any specific tests required. Our optometrist will conduct a thorough eye examination, discuss the findings with you, and answer any questions you may have.

What equipment is used during a home eye test?

Our optometrists use advanced, portable equipment to ensure a comprehensive eye examination. This includes:

  • Tonometer: To measure intraocular pressure and screen for glaucoma.
  • Ophthalmoscope: To examine the retina and optic nerve.
  • Visual Acuity Chart: To assess your vision clarity at various distances.
  • Autorefractor: To determine your prescription for glasses.
  • Portable Slit Lamp: To examine the front part of your eye.
  • Selection of Frames and Lenses: For you to choose from if new glasses are needed.

Can I use my existing frames for new lenses?

Yes, you can use your existing frames for new lenses if they are in good condition and compatible with the new prescription. Our optometrist will assess your current frames and advise you accordingly. If new frames are required, we offer a wide range of styles to choose from.

How do I prepare for a home eye test?

Your optometrist will bring a selection of new frames, in a range of styles and prices, for you to try on. If you don’t find a style that you like or that suits your budget, don’t be afraid to ask if you can see some more.

If you have old frames that you’d like to use again ask the optometrist to inspect them to see if they’re still suitable. Always ask for a statement of the exact cost of the frames and lenses before agreeing to go ahead with the order.

You may be entitled to help with the cost of NHS glasses so remember to ask the optometrist about this.

When your spectacles are ready the optometrist will contact you again to arrange delivery. The person who delivers your glasses should make sure they fit you comfortably.

Thousands of Frames to Suit Any Style or Budget. Single Vision, Bifocal & Varifocal! 1000’s of Cheap Designer Frames all backed by our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

What types of glasses do you offer?

We offer a wide range of glasses to suit different needs and preferences:

  • Single Vision Lenses: For general vision correction.
  • Bifocal Lenses: For clear vision at both near and far distances.
  • Varifocal Lenses: For seamless transition between multiple vision zones.
