Eligibility for NHS-Funded Home Eye Tests
You may qualify for a free NHS-funded home eye test if you meet any of the following criteria:
- Aged 60 or over
- Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
- Considered at risk of glaucoma (as advised by an optometrist)
- Registered as partially sighted or blind
- Receiving certain benefits (e.g., Income Support, Pension Credit)
- Aged 40 or over with a family history of glaucoma
Free eye care in the comfort of your own home
Your home eye test will last for around 40 minutes. Once your prescription has been determined, we’re able to offer tailor made solutions.
The client’s home is easily transformed into a consulting room, allowing our visiting Optometrist to perform a full and comprehensive eye test at home.
We carry out thorough eye health checks on all clients, including spectacle prescription, screening for Glaucoma, Cataract, Macula Degeneration, as well as systematic disorders such as Diabetes and blood pressure.
What happens during an eye test at home?
In order for you to receive a personal and professional service, we aim to:
- Conduct thorough and professional eye examinations to the same standard as you would expect in a high street practice.
- Carry out the examination with the latest optical equipment in the comfort of your own home.
- Provide examinations carried out by an Optometrist registered with the British College of Optometrists.
- Provide a prompt and responsive locally based service.
- Work closely with local GPs and eye clinics.
- Offer an extensive range of very competitively priced frames and lens.
Encourage clients to use their own frames where possible. - Providing training to carers on how they can maximise quality of sight and an explanation of common eye diseases.
If you need to change your glasses
Your optometrist will bring a selection of new frames, in a range of styles and prices, for you to try on. If you don’t find a style that you like or that suits your budget, don’t be afraid to ask if you can see some more.
If you have old frames that you’d like to use again ask the optometrist to inspect them to see if they’re still suitable. Always ask for a statement of the exact cost of the frames and lenses before agreeing to go ahead with the order.
You may be entitled to help with the cost of NHS glasses so remember to ask the optometrist about this.
When your spectacles are ready the optometrist will contact you again to arrange delivery. The person who delivers your glasses should make sure they fit you comfortably.

you will receive a complete home visit eye examination and health check, usually taking between 30 to 50 mins.
After your eye test in home our optician will discuss the results and also give you a copy of your prescription.

Am i eligble for an NHS Funded eye test at home?
- Unable to leave home unaccompanied or
- Require a home visit on account of a physical or mental disability
and you fall into one of the categories for a free NHS sight test listed below:
- Aged 60 or over
- Under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
- Registered blind or partially sighted
- Diagnosed as having diabetes or glaucoma
- 40 or over with a direct relative with glaucoma, or you have been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
- Prescribed a complex lens
or you (or your partner) are receiving the following benefits or credits:
- Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (not contribution based)
- Working Tax Credit and are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
- Child Tax Credit and are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
- You are named on a NHS certificate for full or partial help with health costs (HC2/3)

Do i need a referal from my gp or optician?
No, for an home eye test with Templeman Opticians you only simply need to call our number on 01268 777729.
There is no paperwork to fill in and you will not be charged for your home eye test as its funded and supported by the NHS.
Will my glasses be delivered and fitted at my home like my eye test?
When your new glasses are ready you will receive a call from wendy arranging a date and time thats convenient with you to deliver your new glasses.
Then you will receive another home visit to deliver them and ensure they fit comfortably from our dispensing optician.

Not everyone who has an eye tests needs a new pair of glasses.
However, if your prescription has changed or you’d like to update your glasses, you cxan choose from a wide range of frames and lenses in the comfort of your own home.
